Studying the teachings of Pirkei Avot

This time of year, it is traditional, as the summer beckons, for Jews to study an ancient tract of soundbites from the rabbis called Pirkei Avot. Such memorable declarations as “If I am not for myself who will be for me, but if I am only for myself what am I?” are found in this collection. During the next few Saturday mornings at our Zoom Torah study session (8:30 a.m.) we will examine some of the profound teachings of Pirkei Avot.

It is amazing how timely they can be. We read rabbinic reflections on the tension between fate and free will, the importance of community, and the need to put our lives into a divine perspective. Much of the advice is pragmatic as well as inspirational. Pirkei Avot is a window into a world where God cares, and our choices have global consequences.
