Congregation Beth Shalom is committed to nurturing skills, experiences, beliefs and emotional attachments in our students and families that will enable them to integrate the values of Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim - Jewish learning, worship, and the doing of good deeds - into their lives. Religious School Our program is dedicated to providing excellent educational programs that stress skills and knowledge, positive Jewish identity, and awareness and practice of Jewish values. GAN YELADIM Gan Rishon (For children who are 3 years of age) Gan Sheni (For children who are 4 years of age) Art, music, active play, and storytelling are integrated into the curriculum. HALUTZIM (Pioneers) Kindergarten through 2nd grade Curriculum focuses on the Jewish Holidays, Bible stories and heroes, and the Land of Israel. Students are introduced to prayers and songs to increase their comfort at services. KADIMAH (Striving Forward) 3rd through 7th Grades Torah, Tefilot (prayers), holidays, Jewish history, and Israel are integrated into a spiraling curriculum. Hebrew is taught on both Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Kitah Gimel students entering the Kadimah program are blessed each autumn in a consecration ceremony as part of our congregation's Simchat Torah celebration. GESHER HOUSTON 8th and 9th Grades Gesher Houston is an innovative program that combines an interesting and meaningful weekly curriculum with opportunities for students to meet other Jewish teens from across suburban Houston. Through a series of retreat programs held throughout the year, students learn what being Jewish means to them and celebrate Shabbat with their peers in a fun, creative, and meaningful way. CONFIRMATION 10th Grade Students explore Jewish ethics, issues of social justice, and a variety of topics that have a direct impact on their lives as young adults. The highlight of the year is the Confirmation class trip to Washington, DC, for the L'Taken Seminar run by the UAHC's Religious Action Center. The seminar is an intensive four-day Kallah, focused on Jewish values and social justice. High school students from across the country come together to participate in Torah, Jewish learning, Avodah, prayer, and Gemilut Hasadim, action. At the L'Taken Seminar, students learn about a variety of pressing issues facing our community and our world. Highlights of the seminar include visits to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the National Mall, and the opportunity to lobby Senators and Representatives on issues of concern to us as Reform Jews. B'NAI MITZVAH PROGRAM Upon completing a course of study, our students become candidates for Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Our B'nai Mitzvah program is comprised of preparatory coursework integrated into the Religious School curriculum and includes attendance at Shabbat services, private tutorials, and a series of sessions with the Rabbi. Study focuses on the process of Torah, the meaning of B'nai Mitzvah, an analysis of the student's Torah and Haftara portions, and mastering the Shabbat liturgy. B'nai Mitzvot at Congregation Beth Shalom are both family and congregational celebrations as the Bar/Bat Mitzvah participates in both Friday evening and the Shabbat morning services. MADRICHIM PROGRAM Eleventh and 12th grade students in the Madrichim Program have an opportunity to continue their Jewish education while giving something back to our congregation. Students serve as teaching assistants and activity specialists in our CBSW Religious School. They meet periodically to share their experiences as Jewish role models, to continue Jewish study, and to develop teaching, mentoring, and leadership skills. Students who serve as Madrichim in both the 11th and 12th grad years are awarded the Shomrei Kabbalah/Guardians of the Tradition Service Award in recognition of their dedication to our congregation and the Jewish people. ADULT AND FAMILY EDUCATION Our congregation offers a wide range of educational opportunities for our members and the greater Jewish community. Adult education programs include an ongoing schedule of courses on a variety of Judaic subjects such as weekly Torah study, Shabbat afternoon roundtable discussions, and numerous special educational programs throughout the year. Our Family Education program offers families in our congregation opportunities to learn and worship together. Family programs include Sunday Morning Family Workshops and congregational holiday celebrations. In 1999 and again in 2000, the congregation received a JEWEL Family Program Grant from the Bureau of Jewish Education that enhances our ability to provide quality programming.
